When you start Your PC, there are programs that start automatically and run in the background that takes up valuable processing that could be used to run your flight sim. These programs are antivirus and system utility programs. When you perform a clean start procedure, you prevent these programs from starting automatically.

                                                      Windows Vista

1. Click Start, type System Configuration in the Start Search box, then press ENTER
2. Click the General Tab, and then click Selective Starup
3. Click to clear the Load System Services check box and the Load Start Up Items check box
4. Click to select the Load System Services check box.
5. Click OK, and then click Restart.

                                                Microsoft Windows XP

1. Click Start, Click Run, type msconfig in the Open box, and then click OK
2. On the General Tab, click Selective Start Up.
3. Under Selective Start Up, click to clear the following check boxes
                            (a) Process SYSTEM.INI.File
                            (b) Process WIN.INI File
                            (c) Load Startup Items
4. On the Services Tab, click to select Hide All Microsoft Services check box, and then click Disable All.
5. Click OK, and then click Restart.

Acknowledgement to Microsoft for this procedure which I find stops lock up's and runs any Flight Simulator much more efficient. For further details and a very useful page on Microsofts Web Site go to

Hope this is useful to you fellow pilots, Happy and Safe landings.

Thanks again.  Wink

This is not the recommended way of running Windows XP/Vista, and may cause the operating system to become unstable, or in a worse case scenario will pose several security risks on your system as your are disabling any software anti-virus or firewall security from running.

Unless you have an extremly low spec machine, I would not recommend this, as it will severly impact Windows Security and Usability and Reliability.

hi Joe

Sorry if I set alarm bells ringing Joe, ( PULL UP, PULL UP. )  you may be right about Vista, but it works OK with XP, however Microsoft do give you both the choices of operating systems, on their Web page.

I have never had any problems with it being an internet security risk because the only things running are the basic Widows Desktop and MSFSX. Before I execute the Clean Start up procedure I go to Control Panel and DICONNECT the internet so this not only stops updates from trying to install, which they won't do because all services are disabled in the process, nothing and I mean NOTHING can get in or out of your computer, when I'm ready to reboot back to normal working I reconnect the internet and immediately reboot Normal Start Up. Very Safe and a great advantage to running Flight Sim's As I say, go to the Microsoft Web site and check, this is not something I have dreamed up myself.

Don't worry Folks, I install all my new software this way, and never open MSFSX any other way, and I have been using this method for twelve months now, It's not luck, it's an efficient and sure way of running a flight simulator.  Of course if you intend to fly with others on the Internet in Multiplayer Activities then you obviously cannot use this method.

Ron

My apologies, from your post originally it sounded as if you were doing this whenever you flew, whether this be offline, or online, or ever offline while connected to the internet.

Just to repeat from Ron, yes this is a great way of running your computer with bare XP, but only if you plan to have no internet connection, it is not advised if you have an active internet connection, I would strongly recommend you disable it

An active internet connection if you are going to do a minimal boot

Hi Gareth

I know Joe has replied to you, but just to let you know before I do a miminal boot I go to Start>Settings>Control Panel>right click Network Connections>click Disable, wait about 30 seconds and it will go grey, this denotes it's disconnected> close the Control Panel and begin the procedure I outlined in my clean boot example.
When you have had enough of your flying session go to start and firstly reconnect your internet connection as above except this time click Connect. Then straight away go to Start>Run > type msconfig>OK>this time just select the top choice > Normal Boot> click OK and your PC will reboot itself back with all services operational.

Hope that is clear enough Gareth, after you have done it a few times it get routine

If you want to risk being on the internet without protection, feel free

Gareth, I wouldn't recommend flying online and with clean startup, it will leave your computer vulnerable to attacks!!

ONLY do it when not on the net!!!

If you have done the clean startup, reverse the startup before flying on the net!!

I've been using the clean startup for a couple of months now when i fly and its great but i would never use it for flying online

Hi Shaun

I agree with you completely. If you use Clean Boot to gain a better frame rate etc for your Flight Sim session MAKE SURE ALL YOUR NET SITES ARE CLOSED AT THE TIME AND YOU HAVE DISABLED YOUR INTERNET CONNECTION. as you are leaving your computer with NO PROTECTION. Of course if you intend to fly online using Multiplayer then you CANNOT USE THE CLEAN BOOT PROCEDURE.
At least you know what I mean Shaun, I find the system runs and loads a lot better when FLYING ALONE.

Sorry to shout, but don't go out on the internet with your front door wide open.
