As I understand it is not possible to make Flight Simulator have aircraft only landing on runways 23R and 05R and only departing on 23L and 05L at Manchester like in the real world when both runways are active. Infact, as far as I know the majority of the time, Manchester does only use runway 05L/23R and 05R/23L is mostly out of operation. Is it at all possible to make runways 23R and 05L have all departures and arrivals and nothing ever happening on 23L and 05R in FSX, like how the airport is in the real world when only one runway is active? I have ADE for FSX and I can't seem to get it to work. I've tried closing runway 05R/23L and changed the black "runway path" to a red "closed path" but they are still landing on runway 23L. I was going to delete the runway altoghter but ADE came up with a pop up which strongly advised me to not delete it and I wasn't certain of the consequencies if I did so left it where it was. Any help to make all aircraft movements occur on runway 05L/23R would be much appreciated?

Hi Alexander,

Yes, you can close 23L/05R with ADE.

Open the AFD file in ADE and double click on runway 23L/05R and a properties box opens. Select the Pattern tab and then alter the options so that both ends of the runway are closed for landing and for takeoff. Then do the same for 23R/05L only this time both ends of the runway should be open. If you have the standard file then 23R/05L should already be open. However, one consequence of doing this is that the oneway taxi system may not work and you could get traffic blocks.

After you have made the amendments compile the file with ADE back to the scenery folder giving it exactly the same name as before.

Yes, ADE (Airfield Design Editor) is a free editor, by cruffy Duck, for AFD files. You can download it from:

http://www.airportdesigneditor.co.uk/

It has a very good manual, which you should read.

Hi!

I've been into ADE and closed off runway 05R/23L in the "patten tab" and now have all aircraft movements on runway 05L/23R, just how I wanted. Grin One other thing though is that the Manchester ATIS is still saying "ILS runway 23R and visual runway 23L in use, landing and departing runway 23R and runway 23L" despite the fact runway 23L is closed and all aircraft movements are on 23R. Is there any way of making the ATIS just say runway 23R is in use? If there isn't, it's not a big problem at all, I would just like to correct it if possible!

Sorry Alexander, I don't know of any way this can be done except to completely delete the runway. However, if it is a stock ILS, and it is in this case, you would have yo use the ADE option to suppress it.

That's ok. I will leave it as it is then. I don't want to completly delete runway 05R/23L as I previously said, ADE strongly advised me against it, something to do with it not deleting ILS's and approach data etc.

Yes, that is so, you do have to remove everything to do with that runway, if you delete it. However, if you do delete the runway you remove all the nav data, such as the ILS with it.

Oh, I didn't know that! But what about the approach data, do I have to delete that?

I would leave that as the default will still be there if you did alter it. If you want to try then you will have to compile the airport with ADE and in the scenery folder you will find an xml file with the same name as the AFD file. Open that with notepad and then find the approaches for 23L and for 05R and delete those sections. Open the xml file in ADE and compile the airport again.
