If you loose your broadband connection for any reason you end up with a new IP address. We get numerous power cuts here and each time a new IP.

Couldn't the IP's be traced though?

Most Broadband IPs are fixed (mine is)

Im not possitive at the moment, so no lock willl occur to start with until I have monitored the results of the system

Firstly let me say that I have purchased all of Gary's scenery except for Heathrow & Gatwick.  I have been battling with trying to make FS9 & FSX coexist on my Core 2 Duo system ***without unwanted interaction*** since about a week after I first loaded FSX.  I have failed to get to the stable system I require with ***ALL*** the addons for which I have paid working correctly.

To date, Gary's scenery has always installed correctly - yes Glasgow and Bristol included - many [well perhaps 20 or 30  Grin] times over.  I even advised Gary of what I was doing and why as he may have seen my [purchased but not prime] email addy and IP address too, if he was tracking this way , as it seemed the "polite" thing to do.  After perhaps 30 or so attempts, I have given up on the idea and have gone for separate builds for FS9 & FSX, loading the one I next need/want - multiflyer driven  Roll Eyes

Anyway, back to the plot, many Broadband I/P addresses are "dynamically" assigned, coming from a "pool" of addresses.  This means no guarantee of the same IP being in use by the original purchaser - ***even if they NEVER turn off the ADSL modem*** !!!   I have to pay

Just to follow up in a little more detail what Maurice said.

Every IP address within the UK is dynamically assigned, whereupon DSL providers (Cable/Virgin) state that their IP's are static and although this is true....it is not a guarantee that it will ALWAYS be the same IP it just states that they are typically assigned for longer periods than most connections. Whereupon ADSL (BT, Tiscali etc) use and state the dynamic IP which means every time you reconnect whether a few hours or few weeks if you manage to keep the connection for so long, will eventually change.

The option if your desperate to have a static IP, for server needs or whatever, is the static IP which you pay for and which they ensure stays the same. This however only applies to a very select few.

As Ryan said, each IP is indeed traceable right down to your house door number IF you have the right powers, a normal user can track a IP to within an area or an ISP but going further is a little trickier unless you have some sort of tracker or unless you can get authorisation from whoever deals with that? Police? maybe even BT? i dunno....

The question here is if Gary provided an IP to the authorities....would they do anything, ill leave the answer to you to make up your own ideas on that!

I use ADSL and my IP address has not changed in over a year despite switching it off every night and changing my router about 3 weeks ago.

Hi all,
I thought I better warn people that I can ocassionally have a varying IP address due to security my family has placed on the net. It is possible to buy varying IP addresses. So please watch out for people like me who enjoy your scenery but have to have security.
Cheers Al

I will not be using a changing IP then, but I do beleave IPs are coded and not random, so there some info that can be used.

So far the limit will be 7 Activation on the same email, if you want any more than you just email and I'll clear the counter

Yeah Gary. Wilco Publishing use a similar approach. They have a 3 download limit per product before you have to email in with your Order Number to have the counter reset. Whereas this can be a real pain, especially if large download files get interupted, it seems to provide them with some control over illegitimate use. But, I guess nothing is completely secure.
